1670s, "a drawing on powerful report (used as a model for another work)," from French carton, from Italian cartone "powerful, heavy report, pasteboard," hence "preliminary sketches made by artists on such paper" (see carton). Extension to comical drawings-in papers and magazines is 1843. Punch has got the benevolence to announce, that in an early few his ensuing Volume he'll astonish the Parliamentary Committee by the book of several exquisite designs, become known as Punch's Cartoons!
