1620s (in reduced type clabber), from Modern Irish bainne "milk" (from center Irish banne "drop," also, seldom, "milk"; cognate with Sanskrit bindu- "drop") + claba "thick." Compare Irish and Gaelic clabar "mud," which often made its method into English (Yeats, etc.).
