"publicity, hype," 1908, from circus slang, "a quick test of a sideshow" (1901), that is of as yet not known beginning. There is certainly a village of Ballyhooly in County Cork, Ireland. In nautical lingo, ballahou or ballahoo (1867, maybe 1836) suggested "an ungainly vessel," from Spanish balahu "schooner."
