1580s, "one whom cultivates one of several good arts," from Middle French artiste (14c.), from Italian artista, from Medieval Latin artista, from Latin ars (see art (n.)). Initially used specifically of this arts presided over because of the Muses (record, poetry, comedy, tragedy, music, dancing, astronomy), but in addition made use of 17c. for "one skilled in virtually any art or craft" (including teachers, surgeons, craftsmen, chefs). Now especially of "one which practices the arts of design or aesthetic arts" (a feeling very first attested 1747).
