ambition meaning in Etymology Dictionary

mid-14c., from center French ambition or right from Latin ambitionem (nominative ambitio) "an available," especially to solicit ballots, therefore "a striving for favor, courting, flattery; a desire to have honor, thirst for popularity," noun of action from past participle stem of ambire "to go around" (see background). Rarely found in the literal sense in English, in which it carries the secondary Latin sense of "eager or inordinate desire of honor or preferment." During the early use constantly pejorative, of inordinate or overreaching desire; ambition was grouped with pleasure and vainglory.
