What does actual controversy mean?

actual controversy meaning in Legal Dictionary

n. a genuine appropriate dispute that leads to a real lawsuit instead of merely a "cooked up" appropriate activity recorded to get a court to offer the equivalent of an advisory opinion. Federal process of law, like the U.S. Supreme Court, will only give consideration to an "actual controversy", on attraction, since they cannot provide consultative (casual) viewpoints or make judgments on "friendly suits" filed to test the potential result.
