Cardiac meaning in Etymology Dictionary

c.1600, from French cardiaque (14c.) or right from Latin cardiacus, from Greek kardiakos "pertaining to your heart," from kardia "heart" (see heart (n.)). Cardiac arrest is attested from 1950. Greek kardia also could suggest "tummy" and Latin cardiacus "pertaining on stomach." This terminology continues somewhat in modern-day medicine. Confusion of heart and nearby digestion organs is also shown in Breton kalon "heart," from Old French cauldun "bowels," and English acid reflux for "indigestion."
