1861, originally since the title of a breakaway Confederate region of south brand new Mexico; arranged roughly along modern-day outlines as a U.S. area in 1863. From Spanish Arizonac, probably from a local title one of the O'odham (Piman) men and women indicating "having only a little spring." Alternative concept is it derives from Basque arizonak "great oaks."
