ocean east of Italy, from Latin Adriaticus, from city of Atria (contemporary Atri) in Picenum, when a seaport however now more than 12 miles inland. The name is perhaps from atra, neuter of atrum "black," therefore "the black city;" or else it signifies Illyrian adur "water, ocean."
