The chief towns are Seville (pop. 1900, 148,315), which may be regarded as the capital, Malaga (130,109), Granada (75,900), Cadiz (69,382), Jerez de la Frontera (6 3,473), Cordova (58,275) and Almeria (47,326).
Of the principal ports on this coast, Matamoros, Tampico, Tuxpan, Coatzacoalcos and Frontera are on rivers, which are obstructed by bars.
The capital of the province is SAN Juan, once called SAN Juan DE LA FRONTERA (pop. 1904, estimate, 11,500), in a great bend of the San Juan river, 95 m.
