During the war Flanders Woo), he took Douai, Bethune and Dam, received the submission of Guy of Dampierre, and aided King Philip IV., the Fair, to gain the battle of Mons-en-Pevele, on the 18th of August 1304.
During his term of office he aided Publius Clodius in bringing about the exile of Cicero.
In this respect he was aided with consummate ability by the tact and grace of Lady Palmerston, the widow of the 5th Earl Cowper, whom he married at the close of 1839, and who died in 1869.
