form of poisonous spider (Latrodectus mactans) in U.S. Southern, 1904, so-called from its shade and from the woman's supposed practice of eating a man after mating (these are generally cannibalistic, but this particular behavior is rare in the wild). Often also known as shoe-button spider. The name black colored widow is attested previously (1830s) as a translation of a name regarding the "scorpion spider" of Central Asia.
