meaning of attorney of record

attorney of record meaning in Legal Dictionary

n. the lawyer who has starred in judge and/or finalized pleadings or other forms on the behalf of a client. The lawyer remains the attorney of record until some other lawyer or perhaps the customer substitutes for him/her, he/she is allowed because of the court to withdraw, or following the instance is closed. Occasionally lawyers end up still on record in cases (such as divorces) which they think have long since already been completed.
