patronymic prefix in Welsh names, early in the day map "son," cognate with Gaelic mac. Since 17c. merged into surnames (Ap Rhys = Price, Ap Evan = Bevan, etc.). It is said that a Welshman whom obviously wasn't happy to be exceeded in length of pedigree, when coming up with down their genealogical tree, typed near the middle of their long array of 'aps' -- "about any of it time Adam was born."
