A prison a jail
- A prison; a jail.
term used vulgarly, and occasionally in judicial procedures and legislation reports, to designate a jail or prison, partic- uarly a town or town jail or lock-up. Supposed to be a corruption of the Spanish calabozo, a dungeon. See Gilham v. Wells, 64 Ga. 194.
"prison," 1792, United states English, from Louisiana French calabouse, from Spanish calabozo "dungeon," probably from Vulgar Latin *calafodium, from pre-Roman *cala "protected location, den" + Latin fodere "to dig" (see fossil).
