An acute mosquito-borne viral disease of unexpected onset that usually employs a benign training course with frustration, temperature, prostration, extreme joint and muscle tissue pain, distended glands (lymphadenopathy) and rash. The existence (the "dengue triad") of fever, rash, and frustration (as well as other aches) is especially characteristic. Better known as dengue, the infection is endemic throughout the tropics and subtropics. It goes on various other names including dandy temperature. Victims of dengue usually have contortions as a result of the intense shared and muscle tissue discomfort. For this reason, title "breakbone fever." Slaves in the West Indies who contracted dengue were believed to have "dandy fever" because of their positions and gait.
