Middle ear dilemmas as a result of altering atmospheric pressures, as whenever an airplane descends to land. The issues include ear discomfort, ringing, diminished hearing and, often, faintness. The term barotitis (pronounced bar-o-tit-is) is compounded from bar- like in barometer + otitis meaning infection associated with ear.
