BUREAU meaning in Etymology Dictionary

1690s, "desk with compartments, composing table," from French bureau "office; desk, writing table," initially "cloth covering for a desk," from burel "coarse woolen cloth" (since a cover for writing desks), Old French diminutive of bure "dark brown cloth," that is possibly both from Latin burrus "red," or from Late Latin burra "wool, shaggy garment." Offices becoming saturated in such desks, the meaning expanded 1720 to "division of a government." Indicating "dresser" is from 1770, reported to be American English but at the beginning of Brit use.
