An abscess behind the tonsils that pushes one of many tonsils toward the uvula (the prominent smooth muscle dangling through the straight back regarding the palate in the rear of the mouth). A peritonsillar abscess is generally very painful and involving trouble opening the mouth. If a peritonsillar abscess is unattended, the disease can distribute deeply to the throat, causing airway obstruction and other life-threatening complications.
