APIC meaning in Computer Science Dictionary

Short for Advanced Programmable Interrupt Controller, APIC is a programmable interrupt controller (picture) with higher level interrupt management that was very first developed by Intel and replaces the 8259 interrupt controllers. APIC is essential for double handling or multiple-processor assistance and it has been available since the initial Intel Pentium, however, the motherboard chipset, BIOS, and operating system (Microsoft windows 2000 and soon after) must help APIC prior to it being used.
